For many travelers returning to India—especially NRIs bringing gifts for family or tourists carrying equipment—the walk through Customs can be the most nerve-wracking part of the journey. The age-old question: "Do I walk through the Green Channel, or do I need the Red Channel?"

If you are carrying dutiable goods, the process used to involve long queues and paperwork. However, with the ATITHI App, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has digitized the declaration process, allowing you to handle the formalities before you even board your flight.

Here is how you can use the ATITHI App to save time and avoid stress upon arrival.

The "Red Channel" Checklist: Do You Need to Declare?

Most travelers can walk straight through the Green Channel (for passengers with no dutiable goods). However, you must use the Red Channel (and arguably should use the ATITHI App) if you are carrying:

  • Gifts in Excess of Allowance: If the combined value of gifts/items you are bringing for others exceeds ₹50,000.

  • Alcohol: More than 2 liters of liquor or wine.

  • High-Value Jewelry: Gold or precious stones exceeding the duty-free allowance (limitations vary by gender and residency status, but high-value items generally require declaration).

  • Currency:

    • Foreign currency notes exceeding USD 5,000.

    • Total foreign exchange (notes + travelers' cheques) exceeding USD 10,000.

  • Commercial Goods: Any items intended for trade or sale, rather than personal use.

What is the ATITHI App?

The ATITHI App is an easy-to-use mobile application available on iOS and Android, introduced by Indian Customs to facilitate advance declaration.

Instead of filling out physical forms at the counter while jet-lagged, you can file your declaration regarding dutiable items and currency on your smartphone from the comfort of your home or departure airport.

Why You Should Use It (The Benefits)

1. Digital Convenience No more hunting for a pen or dealing with carbon-copy paper forms. You enter your passport and flight details, select the items you are bringing, and the app calculates the duty (if applicable).

2. The "Fast Track" Advantage This is the biggest incentive. Travelers who have submitted their declaration via the ATITHI app are often eligible for a dedicated Fast Track lane at the Red Channel. This lets you skip the general queue, pay any required duty digitally or quickly at the counter, and exit the airport much faster.

3. Documentation The app keeps a digital record of your declarations, which is helpful for frequent travelers or those who need proof of bringing high-value items (like cameras or laptops) into the country for re-export later.

How to Use the App: A Quick Flow

  1. Download: Search for "ATITHI" in the App Store or Google Play Store (ensure the publisher is CBIC/Indian Customs).

  2. Sign Up: Register using your name and passport details.

  3. Declare: Select "File Declaration." Enter your travel dates and list the specific dutiable items (e.g., "1 Whiskey Bottle - 1 Liter," "Gold Chain - 50g").

  4. Submit: Once submitted, you will receive a reference code/QR code.

  5. Arrive: At the Indian airport, look for the signage marked for "ATITHI / Advance Declaration" at the Customs area. Show your QR code to the officer.

Ready to Fly? The Final Checklist

To ensure your entry into India is completely seamless in 2026, remember these two critical digital steps:

  1. 72-24 Hours Before: Submit your mandatory Online Arrival Card (as detailed in our previous post).

  2. Before Boarding: If you have high-value items, submit your declaration on the ATITHI App.
