Packing your bags for India? Whether you are bringing gifts for family or carrying your own gadgets, knowing the exact limits can save you from an expensive surprise at the Customs Red Channel.
Here is your pocket-sized guide to Indian Customs Allowances for 2026.
The "Green Channel" Limits
If you stay within these limits, you can walk through the Green Channel without paying any duty.
1. General Free Allowance: ₹50,000
Who: All passengers (Indian residents, OCIs, NRIs, and foreigners residing in India) arriving from countries other than Nepal, Bhutan, or Myanmar.
What: This covers gifts, electronics, chocolates, perfumes, and new items.
Note: This is a value limit. If you bring a new iPhone worth ₹80,000, you pay duty on the entire amount (or the excess, depending on officer discretion, though technically duty applies to the excess).
Tourists of Foreign Origin: If you are visiting purely as a tourist (not an OCI/PIO returning home), the limit is lower at ₹15,000.
2. Alcohol & Tobacco
Liquor/Wine/Beer: Strictly 2 Liters per person (must be over 21 years old).
Tip: It does not matter if it is expensive scotch or cheap wine; the limit is by volume (liters), not value.
Cigarettes: Up to 100 sticks.
Cigars: Up to 25 sticks.
Tobacco: Up to 125 grams.
3. Electronics (Laptops & Phones)
Laptop: One (1) laptop is allowed duty-free for every passenger over 18 years old.
Important: This is over and above your ₹50,000 allowance.
Mobile Phones: There is no specific strict limit on "used" personal phones (e.g., carrying 2 phones—one personal, one work—is usually fine). However, carrying multiple new boxed phones will attract customs duty.
4. Gold Jewelry (The "1-Year Rule")
Eligibility: You must have stayed abroad for more than 1 year to claim this allowance.
Women: Up to 40 grams (Value cap: ₹1,00,000).
Men: Up to 20 grams (Value cap: ₹50,000).
⚠️ Crucial Warning: This allowance applies only to Jewelry. Gold coins, bars, and biscuits are NOT duty-free and must be declared at the Red Channel regardless of weight.
🚫 Prohibited / Restricted Items
Drones: Strictly prohibited without prior clearance (do not bring them).
Satellite Phones: Banned.
E-Cigarettes/Vapes: Banned in India.
Cash: You must declare if you are carrying:
Foreign Currency Notes > USD $5,000
Total Foreign Exchange (Notes + Forex Cards/Cheques) > USD $10,000
